Art- is Statement
Glimpses of altemporality. A performance across time, unfolding in slow motion, commune of audience and artist, inseparable parts of a web of thinking, instigated by the work of art in the viewer, influenced by the work's author who never gets the last word, or the first, which is always on loan. Art is non-linear. Anachronism and non-sequitur only exist if we conceive of time as a line. I don't know if altemporality is really a word, but it could be a conception of time that enthusiastically acknowledges multiple histories coursing in a multitude of relativities. It emphasizes the exploration of durée, the subjective, experienced passage of time. Collective memories, histories of the losers, the transience of life. Anachronism that complicates linear notions of history extends political action across time to bypass and undermine revanchism, oppression, even in their moment of hegemony.
Time provides not only a march into the future, but an infinite plane of possibility and we arrive in the present not only by our actions, but through choosing not to act. Imagine resisting the increasing propulsion of contemporary life, the compulsion to consume. Rather than trying to keep pace with harmful, extractive techno-capital productions, creativity is most effective when we wait and take time to imagine what else art can do...
